Abstract

Individual identities and their progression over time are shaped by Gender and Development (GAD). It is critical to recognize that such growth is driven by societal forces that favor equal rights and self-actualization. Review of related literature on GAD revealed that more investigations are needed on the issues and experiences of workers in their workplace. Hence, this qualitative case study described GAD in the Ilokano workplace context. Specifically, it explored the gender issues experienced by the Ilokano workers and their coping to address gender issues including GAD programs and initiatives. Through the cool and warm analyses of the interviews with 10 Ilokano workers, this study revealed three salient findings. First, the gender issues in the workplace are tagged as 3Gs: gauche verbal bullying, gender stereotyping, and gender bias. Second, their coping mechanisms are termed FEM: formulating and abiding by the policy, engaging in a healthy and diplomatic conversation, and maintaining positive attitude and perspective. Meanwhile, the programs initiated by their companies to address the gender issues and to promote GAD are dubbed as the 3Cs: conducting celebration-oriented, conducting info-dissemination, and conducting anti-VAWC activities or programs. This study concludes that gender issues still persist and pervade in the workplace, but Ilokanos remain resilient in facing these issues through GAD initiatives and personal coping. Finally, future investigations should look into the experiences of Ilokano workers who work in construction, farming, retail, and other occupations besides office work.
