Techniques and Challenges of Teachers in Contextualizing Filipino 7 Instruction

Abstract

This study aimed to determine how teachers contextualized the teaching of Filipino 7 as well as their challenges which served as the bases for the development of a suggested guide in contextualizing teaching in Filipino 7. In achieving these objectives, this study employed basic qualitative design to describe and interpret the experiences of the participants. Through analyses of the extended texts, teacher’s experiences in contextualizing include doing activities related to learners’ experiences, using local literature, integrating the culture of the learners, and researching on indigenous knowledge. The lack of contextualized materials, lack of knowledge on literature and culture are the challenges that teachers experienced. In response to these, O-Q-R guideline has been formulated: Observe, Question, and Research. It has been proven that teachers are creative and resourceful because they have different ways of appropriately contextualizing their teaching amidst the challenges that they encounter. Finally, the study recommends that teachers should recognize the cultural environment of students in contextualizing Filipino instruction in Grade 7.
