Agronomic and Yield Performance of Garlic Varieties under Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur Agro-climatic Condition

Abstract
Garlic varietal suitability to agro-climatic conditions is one of the best agronomic traits that ensure yield potential and crop sustainability. Farmland of five barangays in Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur, approximately 84 hectares are left uncultivated after rice production due to the low discharge of underground water for irrigation. Garlic is traditionally mulched with rice straw in Region I to conserve water; hence it is possible as a suitable crop for the area. This research tested five garlic varieties in two crop years to determine suitability. Among the varieties tested, Mexican and Ilocos White were comparable in most agronomic and yield parameters with the tallest plants, longest and widest laminar, heaviest bulb, and yields up to 4,485 kg/ha-1 and 4, 291.39 kg/ ha-1, respectively. The result showed that Mexican and Ilocos White garlic varieties grow and yield better under Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur agro-climatic conditions. Farmers can plant these garlic varieties after rice production to increase their income and to make the 84 hectares of land sustainably productive.
