  • PPS, ISPSC Host National Physics Convention in Candon

The Philippine Physics Society (PPS), in partnership with Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC), convened physicists, scientists, educators, and researchers from across the country for the 48th National Physics Convention - Workshop/Seminar, which opened today, May 19, and will run until May 22 at the ISPSC Main Campus in Candon City.

As part of the celebration of its 52nd Founding Anniversary with the theme, “PPS@52: A Quantum Leap into the Future: Empowering Communities Through Physics Education, Research, and Application,” the convention aimed to strengthen the scientific community’s commitment to improving the lives of Filipinos.

One of the highlights of the event was the keynote lecture delivered by the guest of honor and speaker, Dr. Reinabelle C. Reyes, Director of the Space Science Missions Bureau of the Philippine Space Agency. In her talk, she underscored the steady and strategic progress of the Philippines’ space program, noting its evolution from early foundational satellite missions to its expanding capabilities in Earth observation, communications, and space technology applications. She highlighted how these developments reflect the country’s growing capacity in space science and its increasing role in supporting national development through innovation and technology.

Meanwhile, in his welcome address, PPS President Dr. Gerardo Maxino addressed the participants through his representative, PPS Council Member Dr. Brando A. Piñero, highlighting the importance of physics in people’s lived realities. “We can accomplish better the task we have set for ourselves if we let grow the Physics and larger communities; that community leads us to the accomplishment of our aims and goals”, the president said.

Mayor Eric D. Singson of Candon City also graced the event and, in his address, reminded participants of the critical role science plays in nation-building and sustainable development. He said, “We pursued this [Candon City as part of the Smart City Project of DOST] because we firmly believe that science and innovation are key drivers of progress and development”.

Furthermore, Dr. Mario P. Obrero highlighted the vital role and responsibility of scientists and researchers in advancing community development and nation-building during his welcome address.

“As we embark on this meaningful convergence, may we be inspired to think boldly, collaborate purposefully, and apply physics in ways that uplift and empower our communities,” he said.

PPS Council Members, Dr. Mariquit Obrero, Dr. Rowel Taroc, Dr. Edlyn Santander, and Dr. Raymund Vizcara were also present, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to collaboration and scientific advancement.

Likewise, Dr. Filipinas M. Gasalao and campus directors, including Dr. Sheryll Morata of the ISPSC Main Campus, Dr. Annie D. Dorada of the ISPSC Candon Campus, and Dr. Daniel Juan R. Ramirez of the ISPSC Tagudin Campus, also attended the convention, expressing the institution’s continued commitment to academic excellence and scientific research.

A total of 24 participating schools from different State Universities and Colleges and Higher Education Institutions across the country took part in the convention.

Attendees of the four-day convention are set to participate in engaging learning activities, including lectures and parallel sessions, the 34th National Physics Fair, the Regular Physics Olympics, Beach Olympics, Fellowship gathering, the PPS Awards, and a city tour hosted by the City Government of Candon.

The convention reflects ISPSC’s continued commitment to producing globally competitive scientists and researchers. Likewise, it strengthens collaboration among academic institutions, researchers, and scientific organizations to advance physics education, research, and applications for community development.
