  • ISPSC Team Visits AIT and KU to Bolster Sustainable Agriculture Initiatives

A team from Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC) in the Philippines recently visited the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and Kasetsart University (KU) in Bangkok, Thailand, to build a framework and holistic approach to sustainable agriculture and aquaculture practices.

The two-day visit, which took place on April 25-26, 2024, aimed to strengthen ISPSC's position as an academic and service institution for the agricultural community in Ilocos Sur. The team was headed by Dr. Annabelle B. Francisco, Vice President for Research, Extension, and International Affairs together with her team, Engr. Allyson Mina and Dr. Zeus Vincent Mendoza were assigned to present the purpose of the visits in AIT and KU, while Dr. Ronald Oligario and Dr. Noel Llamar served as the documenters.

On the first day, the ISPSC team, visited AIT's state-of-the-art facilities, including fish tanks, ponds, hatcheries, laboratories, and the university's library. They were guided by Prof. Krishna Salin, the head of the AIT Aquaculture Department.

Later, the team met with AIT officials, including Dr. Nitin Kumar Tripathi, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Mr. Ranadheer Mandadi, Program Officer for Special Degree Programs, and Mr. Arthur Lance Gonzales. Engr. Mina provided an overview of ISPSC's "future-proof agricultural project," and the teams discussed potential collaborations.

AIT offered to host a seven-day tailored training program for the ISPSC team, covering various topics relevant to their project. Additionally, AIT proposed the possibility of ISPSC hosting a three-day boot camp for its students and other State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), with trainers from AIT focusing on Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing (via drone technology).
On the second day, the ISPSC team visited the Kasetsart University (KU) Bangkhen Campus in Chatuchak, Bangkok. They toured KU's fishery sites, laboratories, fish ponds, and the fish museum, guided by Dr. Sukkrit Nimitkul, a professor from the Department of Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries, and his colleagues.

The team also visited the Department of Horticulture at the KU Faculty of Agriculture, where they received a presentation on the department's offerings. However, due to most faculty members being out of town for research, the benchmarking was limited to horticultural services and activities.

The visit to AIT and KU was part of ISPSC's "future-proof agriculture project," which aims to develop a comprehensive approach to sustainable agriculture and aquaculture, integrating various specializations as the college's niche.#
