  • ISPSC rejoins world ranking top colleges

Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC) once again positioned itself in the global arena, joining other higher education institutions worldwide as it landed in the top 300 universities and colleges in the newly released results of the World University Rankings and Innovation (WURI) on June 7, 2024.

ISPSC ranked 15th in the category for Support for Global Resilience for the entry titled “Rebels Turned Mechanicpreneurs: Skills Training on Small Engine and Maintenance to Former Rebels,” 29th in the Entrepreneur Spirit for “From Screen to Sale: Tiendaan ni Panther's Tech- Powered Marketplace,” and 32nd under Industrial Application with “Seeds of Change: Transformative Approaches to Mushroom Farming Training Program.”

The entry titled “Rebels Turned Mechanicpreneurs: Skills Training on Small Engine and Maintenance to Former Rebels” was made possible through the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority provincial office in coordination with the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC), Philippine National Police, Local Government Units (LGU) of Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur, and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). This primarily aimed to provide skills and knowledge among participants that they can use as a source of income, especially since the motorcycle is the main mode of transportation in the area.

Additionally, the Tiendaan ni Panther's Tech-Powered Marketplace from Sta. Maria Campus is an innovative program that supports student entrepreneurs, bridges students to potential buyers, promotes local businesses, and fosters a sense of community during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a Facebook community established by the Office of Student Affairs and Services, where students can sell and buy products from their fellow students.

Meanwhile, the "Seeds of Change: Transformative Approaches to Mushroom Farming Training Program" is initiated by the Extension Office. It aims to evaluate the mushroom production practices adopted by Malakas Farm (owned and operated by Mrs. Jessie Viloria and Mr. Robert Viloria), provide information on the status of the mushroom industry in the Philippines, provide knowledge and technical skills on mushroom production, such as substrate preparation, management, and harvesting; and determine the level of knowledge and skills acquired by the incubatees after the training.

Dr. Ranec A. Azarias, Mr. Christian Abella, Ms. Tricia L. Gundran, Ms. Mary Grace L. Gacusan, Ms. Mary Grace Ramos, Ms. Alma M. Pasahol, Dr. Christian C. Gandeza, and Dr. Noel L. Llamar comprised ISPSC’s Technical Working Group for the WURI 2024.

In 2023, ISPSC was among the universities and colleges that received recognition from the Commission on Higher Education for its remarkable achievement in the world rankings.

This year's achievement was made possible through the mandate of Dr. Christine N. Ferrer, CHED RO1 Director, the then OIC to the Office of the President Dr. Danilo Bose, and the initiative of the Office of Vice President for Research, Extension, and Internationalization headed by Dr. Annabelle Francisco and Internationalization Director Ms. Maria Ana Ilagan.
