ISPSC partners with Kasetsart University in Thailand for probiotics research

As part of its mission to strengthen research culture in preparation for universityhood, the Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC) collaborated with the Institute of Food Research and Product Development (IFRPD), Kasetsart University, Thailand on April 21 to May 2, 2025.  The partnership focused on advancing and exchanging research and innovations in probiotics.

Faculty researchers involved in this undertaking were Dr. Daniel Juan B. Ramirez of ISPSC Tagudin Campus and Dr. Desa Abaya of ISPSC Sta. Maria Campus. Titled “Research Collaboration and Immersion on Products with Freeze-Dried Probiotics”, this partnership provided opportunities for knowledge exchange, joint publications, and development of innovative solutions that are in line with the objectives of both institutions.

Last year, the ISPSC Probiotics Team achieved a major breakthrough in isolating and identifying potentially beneficial lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains from Smallanthus sonchifolius, commonly known as yacon. This indigenous plant, native to the remote town of Cervantes, Ilocos Sur, is further studied for its potential to the development of localized, natural probiotic supplements.

An outstanding researcher and academic himself, ISPSC President Dr. Mario P. Obrero  acknowledged the team’s commitment in fostering research advancements in line with food safety and quality. “This academic endeavor is in line with ISPSC’s strategic direction toward becoming a research-oriented institution,” he stated.

Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Commissioner Shirley C. Agrupis, who also serves as ISPSC Board of Trustees Chairperson, continues to be an inspiration to the ISPSC community, particularly in fostering a culture of research and academic excellence.

In 2023, ISPSC started collaborating with Mariano Marcos State University and Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University for the CHED-Leading the Advancement of Knowledge in Agriculture and Sciences (LAKAS) project entitled, "Advancing Ilocos IFP Food Systems Through Academia-Industry Collaborative Research and Innovations Toward Healthy Food Security”.
