The Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC), through its Indigenous Peoples Education Research Center (IPEDRC), conducted the 1st International Lecture-Workshop on Indigeneity Studies today, July 15, 2026, at the Hostel Building of the ISPSC Main Campus.

The event was organized in collaboration with NAKEM Conferences International and the University of Hawai'i Ilokano Program anchored on the theme "Research and the Indigenous Question in the Philippines: Focus on the Amianan," which brought together educators from across various ISPSC campuses, centering on collaborative dialogues and cross-discussions.

ISPSC President Mario P. Obrero highlighted in his message the critical role of research, extension, education, and institutional collaboration in safeguarding Indigenous Peoples' cultural heritage to foster an inclusive and culturally responsive educational environment.

Dr. Aurelio Solver Agcaoili, Chair of the Department of Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures at the University of Hawai?i, delivered a lecture titled “Rethinking Indigeneity, Research, and the Future of Indigenous Studies in the Philippines.” He emphasized the importance of understanding Ilokano identity, language, origins, and history to promote the preservation of indigenous knowledge systems and cultural heritage.

Among the featured lecturers were Dr. Jonalyn Sad-ayan-Lacambra, Chief of Policy and Rights Advocacy; Ms. Rinbeth S. Riva, Chief of Educational Development; and Ms. Esperanza Pusayen, Chief of Indigenous Knowledge and Cultural Heritage. Their presentations focused on conducting ethnographic research within the NCIP framework, detailing the mechanics of securing community agreements, validating data with local culture bearers, and ethically returning research findings to host communities.

Also present during the activity were Dr. Englebert Mangaldan, Director of IPEDRC; Dr. Katrina S. Sarazawa, Director for Technology Transfer and Patent Unit; and Dr. Archi Martinez, Chief of Statistical Services.

The IPEDRC serves as ISPSC’s center for research, extension, and advocacy on Indigenous Peoples Education. By building local and international relations, the center ensures the preservation of indigenous knowledge systems and cultural heritage, aiming to weave these foundational elements into the future of inclusive education.
