  • Student publication advisers strengthen campus journalists’ readiness for RHEPC

The Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC) prepared campus journalists for the Regional Higher Education Press Conference (RHEPC) through the ISPSC Systemwide Press Conference 2026 held on October 8 at the ISPSC Main Campus in San Nicolas, Candon City, Ilocos Sur.

Dr. Jonathan L. Dela Cruz, in his message, reflected his days when he was a student-journalist and encouraged the campus journalists to use their pen to influence for the betterment of the institution as the line goes, “Pen is mightier than the sword”.

The conference was spearheaded by Mr. Ralph Nicole Sevilla, Chief of Student Publication and Board Director for Ilocos Sur for Ilocos Sur Association of Regional Campus Paper Advisers of Region 1; Dr. Maureen Sta. Ana, Vice President for Ilocos Sur Association of Regional Campus Paper Advisers of Region 1 and The Ilocos Collegian Adviser; Dr. Alma Pasahol, Northern Collegian Adviser; Dr. Noel Llamar, Farmer’s Bugle Adviser; Mr. Chesney Jado, The Advancer Adviser; Ms. Julia Josephine Dasalla, The Tower Adviser; and Mr. Franklin Ganding, The Hands Adviser. This served as a platform for campus publication advisers and student journalists to sharpen their journalistic competencies, assess their readiness for regional-level competitions, and identify areas for improvement in campus journalism.

Lecturers and Judges included Mr. James Karl D. Apawan, Student Leader and an Award-Winning Campus Journalist; Mr. Paul Angelo Juan, Information Officer III and Director for Strategic Communications and Institutional Branding; Ms. Lavinia Villarde-Vez, Master Teacher II and School Paper Adviser; and Mr. Daniel G. Cuenca, Jr. Teacher VI, Award-Winning School Paper Adviser and Photojournalism Coach. Their expertise guided participants in developing and applying the skills necessary for effective, ethical, and responsible campus journalism.

Through the systemwide conference, campus journalists from the official student publication of the seven campuses, including representatives from college student publications, were given opportunities to demonstrate their skills and apply the principles of responsible and effective journalism. The activities also provided a venue for evaluating their performance and strengthening their preparation for the RHEPC. Winners of the said conference will represent ISPSC in the Regional Higher Education Press Conference 2027.

ISPSC continues to support campus journalism by equipping student writers with the skills, confidence, and ethical grounding needed to represent the College in regional competitions and uphold the principles of a free, responsible, and credible student press. (MVB)
